Do you feel it? Therefore, due to intense chewing motions, those muscles can become overworked and strained. In most cases, this is temporary. Once this puppy phase is over and all adult teeth have dropped down, ears will begin standing again. During this time it is completely normal for there to be changes on a near daily basis… One may flop down…The next day the other may fall… both may begin to stand erect, only to have both droop the next day.
It can be a bit of a roller coaster ride, however when all is said and done, the ears will sit as they were meant to. It should be noted that long haired Chihuahuas tend to take a bit longer to have fully erect ears than short hairs. Erect ears are part of the breed standard and therefore, a desirable trait. Responsible breeding includes the careful pairing of 2 dogs, striving to produce litters that will be as close to the breed standard as possible.
With this all said, sometimes even a purebred AKC Chihuahua can have droopy ears…. It can be a genetic quirk that simply happens once in a while and this does not mean that the dog is not a purebred.
While the Chihuahua would not be able to be in conformation show events, this of course does not take away from him or her being the perfect pet. In regard to breeding, while drop-eared Chihuahuas are very cute, since this deviates from the standard and thus makes for dogs that are not genetically sound, they should not be bred as this trait can and often is passed down to the next generation.
As we have said before, it is normal for puppies to have lop ears depending on their breed. It is even possible that two pups from the same litter have different degrees of flaccidity in the ears, and this is due to genetic inheritance from their parents.
If you know that your puppy must have raised ears and has already reached the stage of development where it should have happened, it is important to know that there may be a problem.
One of the most important is diet. Puppies will need a specific type of nutrition to grow properly. When they are not given enough protein and other vital nutrients, one or more of their ears may remain floppy.
There are also some medical conditions that prevent your ears from standing upright. We will detail them in the following sections. There are different conditions that can cause a dog to have one ear up and the other down. However, they are usually accompanied by other symptoms.
When the dog is not treated in time, as can be the case with abandoned dogs, the ear may never lift. Unfortunately, this is often the case with stray dogs. They may have a flabby or misshapen ear due to malnutrition, fighting, illness, fungal ear infections, parasites, or other causes. Sometimes our dog has a drooping ear that is also inflamed.
It is common for this swelling to be due to an abscess. This occurs when pus grows around the site of infection. They are incredibly easy to train and are very smart. Some may argue that this dog breed borders on genius! For this reason, the dog owner is urged to socialize their Chihuahua early on with other people and animals. More than calls by residents were made to animal control. The feral pack was blamed on the animals not being spayed and neutered which allowed them to run rampant and mate as they wanted.

A Chihuahua is a Chihuahua no matter if they have long hair, a short coat, or are a different color. Go ahead and share your Chihuahua stories with us below in the comments! History and Origins of Chihuahuas. Loved this article. I recently adopted a 9 yr. We're getting there tho. My Chihuahua is also mixed with Scottie and Yorkie so barely sheds. His personality keeps us smiling time and again. I have always called him a diva even though he is male. He will often refuse a human food offering by turning his face away from it until it is broken up into his bite size and Hand fed.
I would say the challenge these days with our boy is determining who his bonded human is. He is now 7, and we got him as a 10 week old pup. Originally, he was favoring my youngest son, whose dog he was supposed to be for. Here lately, he has shown no tendency toward any one person in the house there are 5 of us.
All family members are 18 or older. When my daughter gets up to go to work, he clamors for her attention and she has taught him a few cute tricks. So, not real sure how to determine who is his bonded human. Of course, if you have chicken or cheese, you are definitely his favorite at that moment. LOL, he does sound like a little diva. Since he's not all chi, he may not have that total tendency to only have one human.
Thanks for sharing about him! My wife has a condition where she passes out, Blood Pressure drops , Princess has detected it, and comes to alert me if I am not around her, in another area of the house , She has been a Life Saver. All started about 5 am, and unassisted until about , There were no issues and she has been a great Mommy since. I will forever be a Chi Dad. Retired K-9 Trainer. I have a chihuahua also. He's pretty jumpy. Sometimes when he's excited he howls.
