In the past, infant formula manufacturers were sustaining members of NWA, exhibited at its conferences, advertised, and sponsored events and activities. Each state WIC program has a contract with an infant formula manufacturer to provide infant formula within that state. Infant formula manufacturers competitively bid for state contracts. Our mission is to provide our members with tools and leadership to expand and sustain effective nutrition services for mothers and young children. NWA's efforts on behalf of the WIC program have been effective in gaining bipartisan support in Congress, the support of successive Administrations, and a broad coalition of partners, including advocacy groups, health care and religious organizations, and industry representatives.

It is a nonprofit that advocates for the WIC program. WIC breastfeeding peer counselors are mothers recruited from the WIC population who have personal experience with breastfeeding and can provide basic breastfeeding information and support to other WIC mothers.
WIC peer counselors are hired and trained to provide mother-to-mother support in group settings and one-on-one counseling through phone calls or visits to the home, clinic, or hospital. A certification period is the length of time a WIC participant is eligible to receive benefits. In WIC, this is often a dietitian or nutritionist. EBT makes the shopping experience easier for the consumer and the grocery store.
Unfortunately, only a small number of States currently have EBT. A check, voucher, electronic benefit transfer EBT authorization, or other payment method that is issued to the participant to obtain specific foods allowed under the WIC program. WIC only allows certain healthy foods selected to supplement the participant's diet.
These foods are recommended by the Institute of medicine IOM and are consistent with the Dietary Guidelines for Americans as well as the nationally established dietary recommendations for infants and children under two years of age. The foods included in an individual's food package vary based on the participant's category. These are community based agencies that manage applications, certifications and deliver WIC services and benefits.

Become a member of NWA and invest in a community that provides quality nutrition education, breastfeeding support, health care and other referral services for 7 million nutritionally at-risk mothers and young children. The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children WIC is a short-term intervention program designed to influence lifetime nutrition and health behaviors in a targeted, high-risk population.
WIC clinics provide :. WIC is for low-income pregnant and post-partum women, infants, and children up to age 5 who are at nutritional risk. WIC provides certain healthy foods to supplement the dietary needs of participants to ensure good health and development. Senate and House Appropriations Committee. WIC was found to more effective than other cash income or food stamps at improving preschoolers intake of key nutrients. The National WIC Evaluation found that children participating in WIC had higher mean intakes of iron, vitamin C, thiamin, niacin and vitamin B6, without an increase in food energy intake, indicating an increase in the nutrient density of the diet.
Infant Feeding Practices. A FNS study, based on an analysis of data from the National Maternal and Infant Health Study, found that those WIC participants who reported having received advice to breast-feed their babies from the WIC clinic were more likely to breast-feed than other WIC participants or eligible nonparticipants. Since then, the emphasis on breast-feeding in WIC has greatly increased in response to legislative initiatives which mandate breast-feeding promotion in WIC and provide for a national minimum breast-feeding promotion expenditure.
The National WIC Evaluation found significantly improved rates of childhood immunization and of having a regular source of medical care associated with WIC participation. CDC has cited linkage with WIC as a contributor to improved immunization status among low income children.
Cognitive Development. Cognitive development influences school achievement and behavior. Participation in the WIC Program has been shown to improve cognitive performance in children. The National WIC Evaluation found that the children of mothers who participated in WIC prenatally had better vocabulary scores, and children enrolled in WIC after the first year of life had significantly better memory for numbers.
Linkage to strategic goals. This investment is linked to the strategic goals of the agency, which involve the general health and well being of women, infants and children. Specifically, Strategic Goal 3 for the Agency for FY is Improved Nutritional Status and Health of Low Income Women, Infants and Children, which includes objectives for improved dietary practices of participant women and children and improved health outcomes of program participants.
